Brutality of Punjab Police: Humiliation of Indian Police

Young Woman beaten by Punjab PoliceSometimes we Indians wonder if we are living in a free country or are we still ruled by Britishers who during their British Raj crossed all limits of brutality. Well the fact says we are a free country, but does the philosophy of freedom applies on every citizen of our country? Is everyone in India treated equally? Are the laws same for everyone? A shameful incident in the state of Punjab by a group of policemen defies the theory of freedom in all respects; it raises serious doubts about the law and order system of our country.

The depressing incident took place in Tarn Taran district which is about 300 km from Chandigarh in the state of Punjab. On March 4, 2013 four to five Punjab police personnel  were caught on camera beating a young woman and her father. The gruesome incident was recorded by a bystander on his mobile phone on March 3rd and was aired by various Indian TV news channels across the country. Lady’s only mistake was that she complained to police against some taxi and truck drivers harassing her near a marriage palace. A group of shameless policemen slapped and hit her with a baton just for complaining that she was being sexually harassed by truck drivers in the area. Even her ex-serviceman father and brother were beaten by the police mob.

Watch police mob beating the young woman:

The most bizarre part was the police report which was submitted by Amritsar Inspector General of Police RS Mittal to Home Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal it said “Harbinder Kaur (the victim) abused the police in spite of the fact that her parents were present on the spot to take up her cause…”. Nothing was mentioned against the constables or the woman’s complaint against the taxi drivers whom she has accused of sexual harassment. After public pressure, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on March 5, 2013 ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and two constables beating the victim were suspended. After two days of this incident even more shocking statement came from the Punjab DGP who claimed in a press conference that he hasn’t seen the video of the police brutality, he said “Honestly, I haven’t seen the video but I have spoken to the concerned officer. I have seen pictures in print medium”. Just shows how irresponsible our country’s police force is.

Watch reaction of the young woman:

The Punjab Police finally on March 11, 2013 arrested head constable Devinder Kumar and constable Saraj Singh who were caught assaulting the woman. The two have been booked for outraging the modesty of a woman, causing hurt and criminal intimidation. Just because this incident fortunately got recorded and aired on various TV channels across the country, it got some kind of logical conclusion, but what about Indian police dadagiri happening every second across each and every police station and streets of our country which every Indian citizen is well aware of? When is that going to end? When will Indian police understand the real meaning of their job and responsibility towards the common people of our country?

With this kind of behaviour of Punjab Police it can be well inferred that there is some major flaw in the training system of police force of our country, as it’s quite visible that the men in uniform don’t really know the difference between animals and humans. The fact they represent the law regulatory system doesn’t give them rights to treat common people like animals. Is this not worse than the British Raj?

Do you think Indian police really care about common people?
